Here are a few projects that show the range of work I’ve done across user research, interaction design, design systems, front-end development, and accessibility.

In 2018, Jerry Brown, then out-going governor of California, reversed a policy that prevented over one million low-income seniors and adults with disabilities from accessing food stamps (known in California as CalFresh). We wanted to ensure that our service, GetCalFresh, would be ready to receive the hundreds of thousands of newly eligible applicants whose access to food depended on our ability to get it right.

Code for America

Product design and research

From 2017-2018, the GetCalFresh team set out to understand the barriers people faced in applying for CalFresh (food stamps). Based on what we learned, we redesigned the application experience, share our learnings with the greater community, and helped to influence policy change.

In 2017, the GetCalFresh team partnered with the public health community to launch a statewide campaign across college campuses that transformed the perception of food assistance for students. While one would be hard pressed to find a student who had heard of CalFresh in 2016, it is now a very normal part of the college experience in 2018. Today, students are over 25% of our applicant base and we’ve helped over 130,000 students across California apply for CalFresh.

Inkling

Design and front-end development

From 2011-2014, I worked at Inkling in partnership with publishers and educational experts to imagine the future of the book. In small teams, we translated hundreds of textbooks, cookbooks, and travel guides to the digital medium. I worked on titles such as Frommer’s Day by Day, Modernist Cuisine, Campbell Biology, and Megg’s History of Graphic Design.

At Inkling, our goal was to reimagine the educational book for the digital era. A new type of book requires a new type of publishing tool. One of my roles was prototyping tools during the proof phase. I built several tools that helped editors to proofread interactive elements across the book.
